Custom-made Orthotics

Many of the aches and pains you may develop begin with some change in your feet. These are often subtle changes but the impact further up can be very painful. As an osteopath I am not only interested in the pain in your knee, your hip, your back and even your neck but why. Often it is a result of structural changes elsewhere in your body including your feet.

As an osteopath I will treat any foot problem that is revealed in the case history taking and subsequent examination. However I am also keen to rectify why those problems have happened and so will discuss with you the options in respect of a custom made orthotic if that is the most appropriate long term solution for you. Some of the more common foot problems and related issues are , localized Foot Pain, Bunions, Hammer Toes, Arch, Heel Pain, Leg, Knee Pain, Achilles, Calf Pain and Hip or Back Pain –[Even Neck Pain!]

What are custom orthotics?

They look like insoles, but are medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. They work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes – they reduce the stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. Orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole – and they have the advantage of having been made to fit the precise and unique shape and needs of YOUR feet. They are made of a very sturdy material and are designed to last for many years and can be modified to meet any changes in you over that time.

How do they help?

Properly made orthotics are custom fitted to the support requirements of your feet. They help restore the normal balance and alignment of your body by gently correcting foot abnormalities, reducing pressure points, muscle strain and abnormal forces on the ankles, knees, hips and spine. Over time, custom made orthotics can bring you relief from fatigue and pain allowing you to enjoy daily activities comfortably, whether it be sport, or simply a walk around the shops! There are off the shelf orthotics available and it may be that these are the best option for you, I will discuss this with you and make some recommendations. If however it is more appropriate to recommend a custom made orthotic I will discuss this with you and talk about prices and what the arrangements are for measuring and fitting the orthotic.
